Printer ink can be very expensive, especially if you need to do a lot of printing. One way to save money on printer ink is by refilling your ink cartridges instead of buying new ones. This can be a little bit of a difficult task until you get the hang of it. The first thing you will need, is a printer refill kit. How to Refill an Ink Cartridge

After you have the printer ink refill kit, you will need to grab a few paper towels and some scotch tape. Next, remove the old ink cartridge from the printer.

Take the old, empty cartridge and turn it upside down on a few paper towels. Each cartridge can be a bit different, so make sure you have the refill kit instructions handy. Generally speaking though, there will be fill holes on the top of the ink cartridge. Use a pen or pencil to pierce the refill hole(s).

Insert the long needle of the refill ink bottle into the correct hole penetrating the foam down into the bottom of the cartridge. Keep in mind that their are 3 different colors to an ink cartridge in addition to black: magenta, cyan, and yellow. It is important not to push air into the cartridge foam while refilling. An air pocket can cause problems and make it so the cartridge will not print. After refilling the cartridge, clean the top of the ink cartridge off with a paper towel. Cover the holes with a small piece of scotch tape after you have refilled all of the holes.

After you have refilled all three colors, carefully blot (don't wipe or rub) the cartridge printhead on a paper towel. Do this until it stops bleeding and you see an even stripe of three colors showing up on the towel. If the ink on the paper towel shows the colors either faded or not at all, blot on a wet paper towel and again on a dry paper towel to get the ink flowing. Last, put the ink cartridge back into the printer and test it out right away. If the ink cartridge is leaking, do NOT put it back into the printer.
